Altman White English Bulldog
The Altman White English Bulldog is a recently developed breed, named after its creator, Ray Altman. This breed seeks to bring back the Old English White Bulldog, which was prevalent in the southern United States in the 1800s. By crossing the traditional English Bulldog with White English Bulldogs, Altman and his team of breeders have crafted a sociable and loyal breed that features improved athleticism, increased stamina, better health, and an enhanced capacity to adapt to different environmental conditions.
Breed Origin
The Altman White English Bulldog is a relatively recent breed, having emerged just a few decades ago. Its development is primarily credited to Ray Altman, a passionate breeder from Waycross, Georgia, who, alongside other Bulldog aficionados, aimed to create this unique breed. Although it is modern, the Altman White English Bulldog draws inspiration from the older Old English White Bulldog. To achieve the desired physical characteristics, Ray initiated the breeding process by crossing a female AKC-registered English Bulldog with a male White English Bulldog. This combination resulted in dogs that are not only strong and robust but also retain the gentle nature typical of traditional English Bulldogs. Importantly, they tend to experience fewer and less severe health problems, attributed to their longer, straighter legs and reduced brachycephalic traits. Like their ancestors, Altman White English Bulldogs were bred to be adaptable farm dogs, serving roles as hunting partners, cattle herders, and reliable watchdogs. Today, this breed has reached a stable point, with an official breed standard in place. Since 1995, the Continental Kennel Club has recognized them as a separate breed, although they have not yet gained acceptance from other kennel organizations.
Breed Appearance
This breed is typically categorized as medium to large, distinguished by its strong, well-defined musculature and a sturdy, straight back. The head is broad and slightly wider than average, often displaying a natural furrow along the center of the skull. While the head is wide, it does not reach the breadth seen in many bully breeds. A certain level of brachycephalia is acceptable, but the shortening of the skull should remain minimal to moderate. Their eyes are medium-sized and dark, available in round, almond, or oval shapes. The ears, which can be either drop or rose, are small to medium and set high on the head. Although not every Altman White English Bulldog has a natural underbite, this feature is relatively common among them. Their short, stiff coat can be found in any color, though large white patches may indicate merle genetics, which are generally discouraged.
Care Routine
The Altman White English Bulldog, like other Bulldog breeds, is known for having a stronger dog odor, which may require more frequent bathing. It's also crucial to regularly clean the wrinkles on their face to avoid the buildup of dirt and debris in the folds. To control their moderate shedding and keep their coat shiny and healthy, it's advisable to brush them with a slicker brush or grooming glove every week or two. Additionally, dental hygiene is important, as brachycephalic breeds are more susceptible to gum disease and tooth decay, particularly those with a slight natural underbite.
Behavior & Temperament
The Altman White English Bulldog is celebrated for its profound loyalty and commitment to its family and owner. While they are typically gentle with those they care for, this breed tends to have more pronounced territorial and protective instincts than many modern English Bulldogs. If they do not receive adequate socialization during their formative years, they may display heightened aggression towards other dogs. Furthermore, this breed has a significant prey drive, which can result in challenges when interacting with smaller, fast-moving animals if they haven't been sufficiently socialized. These dogs develop exceptionally strong bonds with their families and can experience separation anxiety or depression if left alone for long periods. Originally bred for their determination, bully breeds like this one are intelligent and thrive on positive reinforcement training, although they are likely to resist harsh training methods.
Play & Exercise
Altman White English Bulldogs tend to exhibit more energy than standard English Bulldogs, although they are not classified as high-energy dogs. Their more moderate body structure helps them adapt better to extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold. Furthermore, their longer legs contribute to improved stamina for activities like walking and running. This breed's relatively straight and elongated legs allow for easier participation in activities such as agility training or swimming, in contrast to their shorter-legged relatives. However, because of their spirited and protective nature, these dogs are not well-suited for apartment living; they flourish in environments with a securely fenced yard where they can roam freely.
