These dogs originally served as companions for Spanish sailors, leading to the creation of the term "Barbichon," which was later simplified to "Bichon." Over the years, this breed became a favored lap dog among the nobility in France and Italy, although many mistakenly believe it to be solely French in origin. In the 1930s, a prominent canine authority in France set forth breed standards, distinguishing between two varieties: the "Teneriffe" and the "Bichon." The addition of "Frise" emphasized the breed's distinctive soft, curly fur. The first Bichon Frises in America were born in the mid-20th century, and the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1972. On the other hand, the Boston Terrier, a cherished breed in the United States, has its beginnings in England and is named after Boston, Massachusetts. This breed made its debut in Boston in 1865, resulting from the crossbreeding of various dogs of uncertain lineage, ultimately leading to the delightful Terrier we know today. The American Kennel Club granted recognition to the Boston Terrier in 1893.
