Breed Type : Crossbreeds
Breed Size: Small

The Cavachon is a hybrid breed created by crossing a Bichon Frise with a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These petite dogs are known for their soft, silky coats, which often display gentle waves. Their fur typically comes in various colors, including white, apricot and white, or white with black or black and tan markings, with many showcasing a tricolored pattern. Renowned for their friendly and loving disposition, Cavachons are wonderful companions for families, generally getting along well with both children and other pets. While they may bark at strangers, their small size makes them unsuitable as watchdogs. With minimal shedding, they require relatively little grooming and respond positively to training, particularly when positive reinforcement methods are employed. Cavachons thrive in indoor environments and adapt well to apartment living.

Breed Origin

Breed Origin

The Cavachon is a charming hybrid that combines the Bichon Frise and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Bichon Frise has its origins in the Mediterranean, evolving from a lineage of dogs known as barbets or water spaniels, which were crossed with small white lap dogs. This breeding resulted in four distinct varieties of “barbichons”: the Bolognese, Havanese, Maltese, and Teneriffe bichons. The Teneriffe bichon, which originated from the Canary Island of Teneriffe, eventually became recognized as the Bichon Frise. It is thought that Spanish sailors brought these dogs to the islands, and later, Italian sailors returned them to Italy, where they became popular among the nobility. The breed is even featured in several works by the famous artist Francisco de Goya. The Bichon Frise made its debut in the United States in 1955 and was included in the AKC's Miscellaneous Class in 1971. The original Toy Spaniel, celebrated in artworks from the 1600s to the 1800s, was a favorite among royalty. King Charles II of Britain, who reigned in the late 1600s, had a particular affection for this gentle breed, which is how the Spaniel came to be named. After the king's death, the Pug briefly took the spotlight as the aristocracy's preferred companion. However, after years of careful breeding, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was introduced to North America in 1952, gaining recognition from the American Kennel Club only in 1996.

Breed Appearance

Cavachons are small dogs known for their soft, silky coats that often exhibit gentle waves. Their appearance can vary, reflecting the dominant characteristics of their parent breeds. These dogs come in a variety of colors, including combinations of white and apricot, as well as options featuring black or black and tan markings. Many Cavachons showcase a delightful tricolored pattern. With minimal shedding, they are a great choice for allergy sufferers and are generally low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. Some breeders have developed a smaller version called Toy Cavachons, which measure under 12 inches in height and weigh less than 10 pounds. Despite their petite stature, Cavachons are sturdy dogs with endearing, intelligent expressions, characterized by a broad, rounded skull and a curly tail.

Care Routine

Care Routine

Cavachons are recognized for their low shedding and are frequently regarded as hypoallergenic, making them an excellent option for allergy sufferers. Nevertheless, even with their minimal shedding, consistent grooming is crucial to prevent their coats from becoming matted and messy. Some dogs might need occasional trims. Bathing should be limited to when it's truly necessary, and a high-quality dog shampoo should be used to prevent skin irritation. It's recommended to brush your dog's teeth daily to support dental health and to regularly check their nails to see if they need trimming. Additionally, inspect their ears weekly for any dirt or debris, which can be gently cleaned with a damp cotton ball.

Behavior & Temperament

Cavachons are loving and friendly dogs, making them wonderful companions for families. Their sociable disposition enables them to connect easily with children, and unlike many smaller breeds, they typically do not exhibit aggression. Nonetheless, it’s advisable to monitor their interactions to ensure that play remains gentle. These dogs also tend to get along well with other animals, including cats, particularly if they are introduced at a young age. Cavachons thrive on attention and enjoy playful activities. While they may bark at strangers, their petite size means they are not ideal for protective roles. They are smart and eager to please, which simplifies training, even for those new to dog ownership. Although they don’t need extensive exercise, regular physical activity is essential for their well-being. Your Cavachon will delight in beach walks, outings to the dog park, and playing fetch in a safe yard.

Play & Exercise

Play & Exercise

Cavachons have a moderate exercise requirement, usually needing just a thirty-minute walk each day. These energetic and playful dogs thrive on activities like playing fetch, which helps them burn off excess energy. Their friendly disposition makes them wonderful companions for children, and shared activities can enhance both the dog's physical health and overall happiness. While Cavachons enjoy frolicking in a safe yard, they can also adapt well to living in apartments, as long as they get their daily exercise. However, they are not very tolerant of cold weather, so it’s advisable to keep them indoors during winter or limit their walks in chilly conditions.
