One theory suggests that this diminutive dog made its way to Mexico from China via trading vessels, while the other claims it descends from the Techichi, a dog native to South or Central America. The Chihuahua was highly esteemed for its alleged magical healing powers, often treated like royalty—resting on the pillows of the ill and even cremated and interred alongside their owners after death. The Aztecs integrated the Chihuahua into their medical and spiritual rituals, as illustrated by various ancient artifacts. In contrast, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a relatively contemporary breed that has undergone considerable transformation over time. Originally, this breed had a longer snout, which was preferred by King Charles II, but it eventually evolved into the shorter-nosed variety we recognize today after being crossed with Pugs following the king's era. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel arrived in the United States in the early 1940s, and breed standards were formalized with the establishment of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club in the 1950s. Often dubbed the "comforter spaniel," this breed was even owned by President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, during their presidency. The American Kennel Club granted official recognition to the Cavalier King Charles breed in 1995.

Breed Appearance

The physical characteristics of a Chilier, including its coat color, type, and length, are shaped by its parent breeds, the Chihuahua and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These two breeds exhibit slight variations in size and coat traits. Chihuahuas can have either long or short hair, whereas Cavaliers typically have medium to long fur. The smooth-coated Chihuahua boasts a sleek, glossy coat that hugs the body, enhanced by a fuller ruff of fur around the neck. On the other hand, the long-coated Chihuahua features a soft, possibly slightly wavy coat, adorned with fringed ears and a plumed tail, and may also show feathering on its feet. With Chihuahuas coming in a diverse array of colors—including black, white, fawn, chocolate, gray, silver, tricolor, brindle, spotted, and merle—predicting the color of a Chilier's offspring can be quite complex. This breed typically has a medium-length, silky coat with gentle waves and is available in several colors, such as Blenheim, tricolor, black and tan, and ruby.
