Breed Origin

Captain Max von Stephanitz is credited with the development of the German Shepherd, a strong and hardworking breed that originated in Germany in the 1800s. These dogs, known for their height, grace, and agility, were originally tasked with protecting and herding sheep in rugged terrains. While they started as farm animals, their exceptional intelligence soon led to their recruitment into the German military. However, during the World Wars, negative perceptions of Germans resulted in a decline in the breed's popularity, which was previously referred to as the German Sheepdog. Fortunately, the German Shepherd regained its esteemed reputation and is currently the second most popular breed recognized by the United Kennel Club, which it joined in 1908. Nowadays, these dogs excel in various roles, including service, therapy, and law enforcement. The Chow Chow is considered one of the oldest dog breeds, with origins dating back to 150 B.C. during the Han Dynasty in China. Recent genetic studies indicate that it is among the 14 original dog breeds. Renowned for their guarding and herding skills, Chow Chows are thought to be related to the Samoyed and ancient Mastiff. In the Han Dynasty, they were prized as protectors and, when necessary, as a food source. The breed eventually reached the royal courts of Europe and later North America, where they evolved from guardians to cherished companions. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Chow Chow in 1903.

Breed Appearance

The Chow Shepherd typically inherits the prominent characteristics of the Chow Chow, particularly noticeable in its coat and body structure. This breed is sturdy and may occasionally have a fluffy appearance. Its coat varies from medium to medium-long in length, yet it consistently remains thick and dense. The tail can either be long and slightly sweeping, similar to that of a German Shepherd, or it may curve more like that of a Chow Chow. Like both of its parent breeds, the Chow Shepherd features brown eyes and upright ears. Its muzzle is of moderate length, and while its face is generally sleeker compared to the rounder shape of the Chow, it can appear somewhat rounded when framed by the distinctive mane of the Chow Chow. Coat colors can vary, but it often displays the reddish-brown shade typical of the Chow Chow, along with the facial markings characteristic of the German Shepherd.

Care Routine

Chow Shepherds are a crossbreed of two dog types recognized for their dense, heavy fur, which leads to considerable shedding. Consequently, these dogs need extensive grooming. It is recommended to brush your Chow Shepherd daily with either a pin brush or a slicker brush, and during heavy shedding seasons, using a deshedding tool can be particularly helpful. To ensure good dental hygiene, aim to brush their teeth at least three times a week; this practice can help avert serious dental problems, potentially reducing the need for veterinary visits to just an annual checkup. Bathing should be done as needed rather than on a fixed schedule, unless they get dirty from rolling in something unpleasant. Furthermore, their strong nails can make trimming difficult, so it’s essential to clip them at least twice a month to keep them under control.

Chow Shepherds are known for their strong-willed personalities, which can make them less ideal for households with young children or smaller pets. Although they are affectionate, they often approach unfamiliar people with caution and may exhibit protective behaviors. These dogs are particularly adept at securing homes and properties, and they flourish as companions, especially when their routines include obedience training. This training not only helps them develop social skills in a neutral setting but also prepares them for interactions at home. With a keen desire to learn and the ability to tackle various tasks, the Chow Shepherd is well-suited for individuals or families who appreciate both the challenges and rewards of having a canine partner.

The Chow Shepherd is an active and lively breed that flourishes in a bustling home environment. This dog needs a large, secure yard to run and explore, making him ill-suited for apartment life, as he requires plenty of fresh air daily to stay healthy and content. With his athletic physique and confident personality, he makes a fantastic partner for outdoor activities like hiking or jogging. Ideally, he should have at least two extended walks each day. Furthermore, he may thrive in pursuits such as agility or flyball, which allow him to stimulate both his mind and body while interacting with other dogs.
