The Dualanese is a toy breed that emerges from the crossbreeding of a purebred Havanese and a purebred Bolognese. These dogs typically weigh up to 14 pounds and are available in a variety of colors, such as white, black, black and tan, sable, and grey. The Havanese is characterized by its thick, silky, and soft coat, whereas the Bolognese is known for its long, fluffy fur. Both breeds are recognized for their intelligence and playful demeanor, but they have different exercise needs. Bolognese dogs require minimal physical activity to stay content, while Havanese dogs need more exercise. Consequently, the exercise requirements for a Dualanese will largely depend on which parent breed they take after. Additionally, Havanese dogs are known for their affectionate nature but often struggle with being left alone.
Breed Origin
The Dualanese is a mixed breed that emerges from the crossbreeding of a Bolognese and a Havanese, the latter being recognized as the national dog of Cuba. The Havanese lineage can be traced back to the now-extinct Blanquito de la Habana, or "little white dog of Havana." It is believed that the Blanquito was bred with several Bichon breeds, including the Poodle, which ultimately led to the creation of the Havanese. These dogs are thought to have traveled to Cuba with early colonists on ships and are believed to share a common ancestor with the Tenerife dog, the ancestor of all Bichon breeds. Spanish colonists in Cuba developed a fondness for these small dogs, keeping them as beloved companions in their homes. During the Cuban revolution, many Cubans emigrated to the United States, often leaving their pets behind. However, some Havanese made the journey to the U.S., where they were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1996 and have since become one of the club's fastest-growing breeds. The Bolognese, another breed within the Bichon family, is named after Bologna in Northern Italy, where it is believed to have originated. Other breeds in the Bichon category include the Coton de Tulear and the Maltese. Historically, Bolognese dogs were favored by Italian nobility and were owned by notable figures such as Catherine the Great of Russia and the Marquise de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV of France. Their image can be seen in 17th-century tapestries created by Flemish artisans. The breed was later introduced to England and was featured at the Crufts dog show in 2002, although it has not yet received recognition from the American Kennel Club.

This breed is likely hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for allergy sufferers, and they don’t have a strong odor; however, regular baths will help maintain the quality of their coats. Aim to brush your dog’s teeth daily and check their ears for dirt, which can be gently cleaned with a damp cotton ball. Additionally, monitor their nails regularly to see if they require trimming.
Behavior & Temperament
A Dualanese dog typically inherits characteristics from its parent breeds, resulting in a pet that is both loving and playful, with a keen need for attention. These dogs make excellent companions and thrive on family engagement, as they prefer not to be left alone for long stretches. While it's important to supervise them around young children, they usually get along well with older kids and other animals, including cats. Known for their intelligence and eagerness to please, they enjoy participating in whatever activities their owners are involved in. Like their parent breeds, early socialization is essential to avoid the emergence of unwanted behaviors, but they are generally straightforward to train. They respond particularly well to positive reinforcement, especially during house training. Dualanese dogs do not need excessive exercise to stay healthy and fit, and they often develop a strong attachment to one person, closely following them. They may show some wariness around strangers.

They love interacting with their owners and make excellent companions for people of any age. Furthermore, they flourish in warmer environments and should not be left outdoors in chilly conditions.
