The Elo dog, originally known as Eloschaboro, is a recently developed breed from Germany, crafted by Marita and Heinz Szobries. This breed combines the characteristics of the Eurasier, Old English Sheepdog, and Chow Chow, with the goal of creating an ideal family companion. These friendly, medium-sized dogs are particularly good with children and possess a strong eagerness to please. However, their high energy levels may pose challenges in adapting to smaller living spaces like apartments. The emphasis during the breed's development has been on temperament and behavior rather than on physical traits, leading to noticeable differences in appearance among individual dogs.

The Elo dog is a relatively recent breed originating from Germany, created in 1987 by breeders Marita and Heinz Szobries. Their aim was to develop a dog that would thrive as a family pet, focusing on temperament and behavior rather than just physical characteristics in their breeding efforts. The breed's foundation is a blend of the Eurasier, a German spitz-type dog, and the Old English Sheepdog, often referred to as Bobtails. Due to the limited availability of Eurasier dogs, the breeding program also included Chow Chows, along with a few Samoyeds and Dalmatians. A genetic analysis conducted in Germany indicated that Elo dogs are composed of roughly 48% Eurasier, 23% Bobtail/Old English Sheepdog, and 10% Chow Chow, with only minimal contributions from other breeds. Today, the Elo remains a rare and carefully regulated breed, safeguarded by the Elo Breeding and Research Association, which was formed to manage its development. Although some breeders outside of Germany have tried to replicate the breed for profit, only those dogs bred with the explicit approval of the original founders are recognized as authentic Elo dogs. This distinction is vital for prospective owners to keep in mind, as the original breeders prioritized the breed's temperament and health, while profit-driven breeders may focus more on appearance, potentially resulting in notable differences in temperament.
The Elo dog breed was developed with an emphasis on behavioral traits rather than physical features, leading to a wide variety of appearances. Generally, these dogs stand between 18 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and have a body that is slightly longer than it is tall, topped off with a long, well-furred tail that arches gracefully over their back. They exhibit a somewhat foxy appearance, characterized by triangular ears covered in fur and a long, tapered muzzle, though the length and shape of the muzzle can differ among individuals. Their thick, double-layered coat comes in nearly any color, including gray, red, brown, or black, often accented by a white chest and belly. The outer coat can be either flat-coated, known as Glatthaar, which features medium-length straight fur that is usually shorter on the face and legs, or wire-coated, referred to as Rauhaar, which has long, wavy fur throughout the body. Both coat types are designed to withstand various weather conditions and should not be washed too often, as frequent bathing can remove the coat's natural oils. While regular bathing and trimming are generally unnecessary, these dogs do shed considerably, making daily brushing important. It is essential to thoroughly brush the entire coat during grooming to avoid tangles and mats in the undercoat. Shedding tends to increase with seasonal changes, which may require brushing more than once a day to keep it under control.

Both the flat-coated and wire-coated breeds feature a weather-resistant outer layer that should not be washed too often, as frequent bathing can strip the coat of its natural oils. Although these dogs generally do not need regular baths or trims, they do shed significantly, making daily brushing a necessity. When grooming, it’s important to thoroughly brush the entire coat to avoid tangles and mats in the undercoat. Shedding tends to become more pronounced with seasonal changes, often requiring multiple brushing sessions each day to keep it under control.
The Elo dog is characterized by its lively and obedient nature. This breed is friendly and cheerful, showing a deep affection for people of all ages. While it's important to monitor interactions between young children and dogs, Elo dogs are generally trustworthy around little ones. They do tend to be cautious with strangers and unfamiliar dogs. As this breed is being developed as a family companion, it combines traits from working dogs, resulting in a high level of physical and mental activity. Without adequate mental engagement and exercise, Elo dogs may become bored, which can lead to mischievous behavior or the emergence of anxiety and destructive tendencies. They have a low prey drive, making them safer around other pets in the household. Eager to please, Elo dogs are usually straightforward to train; however, they can be prone to wandering, so reliable recall commands are essential for their safety.

Elo breed dogs are generally very active and need at least 45 minutes to an hour of intense exercise each day, though they can often manage more. While they lack a strong instinct to chase prey, they do have a tendency to roam. These dogs thrive on consistent outdoor activities, but it's important to supervise them, as they are prone to digging and can easily escape. Given their high energy, they are not ideal for apartment living; they do best in spacious homes with a yard.
