If you're looking for a dog full of personality, your search stops here. The Enganese is an energetic and lively breed, showcasing a dynamic character. Generally, this small dog weighs between 10 and 15 pounds and reaches a height of about 8 to 14 inches. With its inquisitive spirit, friendly temperament, and well-mannered behavior, the Enganese makes a wonderful family pet, guaranteed to provide joy and amusement.

The English Toy Spaniel was originally divided into separate breeds based on their color variations—specifically King Charles, Prince Charles, Blenheim, and Ruby—mainly for the purpose of dog shows. However, in 1904, the American Kennel Club consolidated these four color types into one breed, naming it the English Toy Spaniel. This breed is known for its short muzzle and small stature, traits believed to have developed from crossbreeding with the Pug in the early 20th century. Once a favorite among the elite, it was owned by notable figures such as Charles I, Charles II, and Mary, Queen of Scots. In contrast, the Havanese breed takes its name from Havana, Cuba's capital. As a member of the Bichon family, it is thought that Spanish settlers brought the Havanese to Cuba in the 1700s. Historians believe this breed is a descendant of two now-extinct breeds known for their long, soft coats. Documentation from ship manifests originating in Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands, shows that small dogs were brought to Cuba by travelers. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, many Havanese dogs found their way to the United States, and the breed received official recognition from the American Kennel Club in 1996.
The Enganese boasts a joyful black nose and striking dark brown eyes that embody its playful nature. This hybrid breed is both compact and sturdy, marked by straight legs and an energetic gait. Its ears, which are medium to long, gracefully drape alongside its head. The coat is long, thick, silky, and wavy, while the tail elegantly curves over its back. With small, well-defined teeth, the Enganese presents an undeniably charming smile.

The Enganese, being a small breed, necessitates diligent dental care due to its vulnerability to oral health problems and tooth decay. Daily brushing is crucial to maintain their dental hygiene. Nail trimming should occur every two months. To keep their coat looking shiny and full, it’s recommended to brush them at least every other day with a pin brush, taking care to gently detangle any knots. Prior to bathing, make sure to thoroughly comb the coat to avoid matting. If your Enganese has the longer fur characteristic of the Havanese, regular grooming every 6 to 8 weeks may be required. Additionally, it’s important to keep their ears clean and free from dirt and moisture.
The Enganese is a relatively low-maintenance dog, yet he enjoys attention and is not hesitant to ask for it. His laid-back demeanor allows him to get along well with most people he meets. Although he typically shows patience with children, it’s crucial to teach them to handle him gently, as he may react defensively if his tail is pulled or if he feels restricted. This breed can experience anxiety when left alone for long stretches, making him less suitable for those who are frequently away from home. While his gentle disposition demands a considerable amount of time and care from his owner, he reciprocates with abundant love and companionship.

This hybrid breed flourishes in an apartment environment, as long as it gets enough physical activity. Ideally, taking it for two walks each day and visiting the dog park several times a week will keep your Enganese mentally stimulated and stave off boredom. Enrolling in obedience classes is also beneficial, as this dog tends to respond well to training and enjoys the reassurance of meeting its owners' expectations. Many Enganese owners characterize their pets as delightfully energetic and eager to learn new skills.
