Breed Origin
The historical context of the Engatzu Spaniel is somewhat sparse, but exploring the ancestry of its parent breeds can provide insight into its likely characteristics. The Shih Tzu, an ancient breed surrounded by mystery, has origins that remain a topic of debate—whether it originated in Tibet or China is still unclear. What is certain, however, is that this small dog was cherished as a companion. Often compared to miniature lions, Shih Tzus rose to prominence in 1861 within the Imperial Court of China, where their esteemed status meant that harming one could result in a death sentence. Empress Tzu Hsi, an ardent animal enthusiast, initiated a breeding program dedicated to the Shih Tzu, and these dogs were often presented in pairs to visiting dignitaries and notable individuals. In 1933, Lady Brownrigg's kennels in England began breeding Shih Tzus, marking the breed's first introduction and breeding in the United States. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed as part of the Toy Group in 1969. In a similar vein, the English Toy Spaniel has a distinguished royal lineage, having been a favorite in royal courts. Mary, Queen of Scots, had a particular affection for this small spaniel, as did her grandsons, Charles I and Charles II. Initially known for its pointed muzzle, the breed underwent crossbreeding with the Japanese Chin and the Pug, leading to the shorter muzzle characteristic of today’s dogs. It is crucial to differentiate the English Toy Spaniel from the King Charles Cavalier, which is slightly larger and features a longer nose. Although they were once regarded as a single breed, they have since developed into separate breeds.
