The Eskenji is a mixed breed that emerges from the crossbreeding of the American Eskimo Dog and the Basenji. The Basenji, often dubbed the "barkless" dog, hails from Africa and is considered one of the oldest dog breeds. Some experts contend that the Basenji displays more traits akin to wild canids than to domesticated dogs. Notably, female Basenjis breed only once a year, reflecting the reproductive habits of their wild counterparts. The breed was introduced to the United States in the 1930s, following earlier unsuccessful attempts to bring them to Europe, where many perished due to illness. In 1942, shortly after their arrival, the Basenji Club of America was founded. Conversely, the American Eskimo dog traces its origins to Germany. This breed, with European ancestry, is related to the Pomeranian, German Spitz, Keeshond, and Italian Spitz. Previously known as the American Spitz, the American Eskimo gained popularity in the U.S. as a circus performer, captivating audiences with its striking white fur. Before achieving fame, this breed primarily functioned as a working companion on farms. Since 1994, the American Eskimo has been officially recognized as part of the Non-Sporting Group by the American Kennel Club.
Breed Appearance

The Basenji breed is notorious for jumping onto kitchen counters in search of snacks, so be mindful of your food when he’s around. He may also pose a risk to cats unless he has been raised with them and considers them part of his family. Thanks to the watchdog traits inherited from his American Eskimo parent, your Eskenji may be suspicious of strangers. To ensure he grows into a well-adjusted companion, provide him with plenty of obedience training and socialization experiences.
Play & Exercise
The Eskenji is naturally both a skilled hunter and a hardworking breed, necessitating daily physical activity. Ideally, it should enjoy at least two walks each day, although some individuals may benefit from more energetic play sessions. Known for its clever escape tactics, it’s vital to never leave an Eskenji unsupervised in the yard. While this breed can adjust to apartment living or smaller homes as long as it gets enough exercise, a secure, fenced yard is the best environment for it. Keep in mind that the Eskenji might be able to scale chain link and wooden fences, so constant supervision in the yard is essential.
