Toy Fo-Chon

Purpose
Family pet
Breed Type : Crossbreeds
Breed Size: Small

The Fo-Chon is a charming hybrid breed that emerges from the union of the Bichon Frise and the Toy Fox Terrier. Given that both parent breeds are small, the Fo-Chon is also likely to be compact, typically weighing about 9 pounds and standing around 10 inches tall. Their coat is of medium length and dense, often showcasing a curly or frizzy texture inherited from the Bichon Frise. Fo-Chons are known for their lively and playful personalities, making them well-suited for family life, and they generally get along with everyone. While they are friendly, they also have a protective instinct towards their owners, which makes them effective watchdogs. Training these dogs may require some patience, as they can sometimes be a bit stubborn.

Breed Origin

Breed Origin

The Bichon Frise is thought to trace its origins back to ancient times, but it arrived in France during the 14th century, originally known as the Barbichon, which means "curly coat" in French. Its earliest ancestor is the Water Spaniel, or Barbet, and it shares lineage with breeds such as the Maltese, Poodle, and Caniche. There are four main varieties of Bichons: the Bichon Tenerife, Bichon Havanese, Bichon Bolognese, and Bichon Maltais. Specifically, the Bichon Frise descends from the Bichon Tenerife, named after the island where it was first found. This breed became popular among Spanish sailors, who often traded them. In the 1300s, Italian sailors introduced these delightful dogs to Italy, where they quickly gained favor among the aristocracy. When the French invaded Italy, the Bichon Frise became a beloved companion of Henry III, who famously carried his cherished pets in a basket around his neck. By the 1800s, it was recognized for its exceptional intelligence and ability to learn tricks, leading to its performances in circuses and as street entertainers. Although the American Kennel Club (AKC) did not officially recognize the Bichon Frise until 1972, it has since risen to become the 45th most popular breed in the United States. In contrast, the Toy Fox Terrier was created in the United States during the 1930s, primarily for the purpose of hunting small pests like rats, mice, and squirrels. This breed is a blend of the Smooth Fox Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Italian Greyhound, and several small toy breeds, including the Chihuahua. The Toy Fox Terrier was officially registered with the AKC in 2003 and currently holds the position of the 116th most popular dog breed in the nation.

Its coat is dense and can range from medium to long in length, featuring a variety of textures that may be frizzy, curly, wavy, or even straight in some areas. This breed showcases a color spectrum that includes black, brown, tan, white, and various combinations of these hues. Notably, the Fo-Chon has a compact head with an elongated snout and large, pointed ears. Its slender legs and long tail—occasionally docked—add to its diminutive size. Care Routine

Care Routine

To keep your Fo-Chon’s coat in top condition, it’s important to brush them three to four times a week with both a stiff bristle brush and a slicker brush. Focus particularly on the areas beneath the legs and around the neck to prevent matting and tangling. Given that Fo-Chons are susceptible to skin allergies, it’s crucial to use only shampoos and grooming products that your veterinarian recommends. Limit baths, as frequent washing can strip the coat of its natural oils, resulting in dry skin. Additionally, clean their ears weekly with a damp cotton ball, and watch for any signs of redness, mites, or wax buildup. Regularly trim their toenails to avoid painful overgrowth and cracking, and be sure to brush their teeth several times a week to maintain good dental health.

Behavior & Temperament

This breed makes an excellent family pet and is also effective as a watchdog, although it may need extra training to develop appropriate indoor habits. While they are highly intelligent, their strong-willed nature can require some patience during the housetraining phase. The Fo-Chon is loving towards children, but it's crucial to supervise interactions, as they might nip if they feel overly provoked. Generally, they are sociable with other dogs, but early socialization as puppies is key to promoting positive relationships with other animals, including cats. Due to their hunting instincts, it's best to avoid leaving them alone with smaller pets such as ferrets, rabbits, or tiny kittens.

Play & Exercise

Play & Exercise

The Fo-Chon is a breed characterized by a moderate level of energy, needing approximately 30 to 45 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Without adequate physical activity, this lively dog may become stressed and anxious. A lack of exercise can lead to boredom, potentially causing behavioral issues like excessive chewing and barking. This breed thrives on activities such as running, jumping, and is particularly suited for agility training, Frisbee, Flyball, hiking, swimming, and trips to the dog park. It's crucial to ensure that your dog is well-socialized to foster positive interactions with other dogs.
