The Foodle is a small hybrid dog breed created by crossing a Toy Poodle with a Toy Fox Terrier. Typically, these dogs reach a height of about 10 inches and weigh around 11 pounds. Their coat is short and dense, featuring either wavy or curly patterns, and they come in a variety of colors, with black, brown, white, and gray being the most common. Renowned for their keen awareness and attentiveness, Foodles thrive on love and enjoy snuggling. They are highly trainable, quickly mastering tricks and commands. Due to their petite size, Foodles are ideal companions for apartment dwellers and generally get along well with other pets and children, as long as they receive proper socialization.

Breed Origin

The Poodle is an ancient breed, believed to have originated in Germany around the first century. Artifacts from that time, including illustrations and sculptures, showcase dogs that closely resemble the Poodle. It is widely thought that this breed evolved from the North African Barbet and various water dogs from countries such as France, Hungary, Portugal, Germany, Russia, and Spain. Alternatively, some theories suggest that Poodles may have descended from herding dogs in Asia, which were introduced to Europe by the Ostrogoth and German Goth tribes. Historically, Standard and Miniature Poodles were used for hunting waterfowl and truffles, while the Toy Poodle was bred mainly as a companion for the wealthy. In the 1800s, gypsies recognized the breed's aptitude for performing tricks, which contributed to its rise in popularity within circus performances. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Poodle in 1887, and it currently holds the position of the seventh most popular dog breed in the United States. The Toy Fox Terrier, a mix of the Smooth Fox Terrier, Manchester Terrier, and Chihuahua, originated in the United States during the 1800s. This breed was primarily used for hunting small game like rodents and squirrels. The Smooth Fox Terrier itself is a crossbreed of the Old English Terrier, Bull Terrier, Black and Tan Terrier, Beagle, and Greyhound. Due to its compact size, the Toy Fox Terrier can navigate tight spaces where prey may be hiding, making it a nimble and effective hunting partner. Although the breed was not officially recognized by the AKC until 2003, it has since become the 116th most popular dog breed in the nation.

Breed Appearance

The Foodle is a small breed, often classified as toy-sized, typically measuring under 12 inches in height and weighing between 9 and 13 pounds. Their coats are usually dense and can be either curly or wavy, similar to that of the Toy Poodle, although they may also have a finer texture akin to the Toy Fox Terrier. Foodles come in a variety of colors, including black, brown, tan, white, cream, and various combinations of these hues. They are easily recognized by their floppy ears, round heads, long fluffy tails, and slender legs. Their small, dark eyes and black noses enhance their charming appearance, while their broad chests and elongated muzzles contribute to their unique look.

Care Routine

The Foodle is typically considered hypoallergenic, as they rarely cause allergic reactions. However, they do lose a small amount of fur when handled. To support their skin health and enhance circulation, it is recommended to brush them with a stiff bristle brush two to three times a week and trim their nails as needed. Additionally, it’s important to clean their ears weekly using cotton balls, while monitoring for any earwax accumulation or signs of ear mites, which may appear as dark residue. Due to the Foodle's susceptibility to skin problems, it is crucial to use only shampoos or soaps that your veterinarian suggests. Furthermore, maintaining their dental health requires regular brushing with dog-specific toothpaste several times a week.

Behavior & Temperament

This breed is exceptionally loving and thrives on affection, but it's essential to keep an eye on them when they are around young children, as their small size can make them susceptible to harm. Despite their petite frame, they exhibit a courageous nature and are ready to stand up to any animal or person that threatens their family, which makes them effective watchdogs. They will bark loudly to warn you of any potential risks. Generally, they get along well with other pets, but early and proper socialization is vital. Their intelligence enables them to pick up tricks quickly and easily. Training is relatively simple, but it’s important to emphasize positive reinforcement rather than physical punishment.

Play & Exercise

Your Foodle needs about 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily to maintain good health and proper behavior. A lack of physical activity can lead to feelings of boredom and anxiety, which may manifest in behavioral problems such as excessive barking or destructive chewing. This breed thrives in dynamic activities like running and jumping, making them perfect partners for games such as Frisbee, fetch, and Flyball, as well as agility training and obedience exercises. Moreover, your Foodle will likely enjoy hiking, jogging, walking, visiting dog parks, swimming, or simply playing in the yard. It's crucial to keep an eye on them when outdoors, as their small stature makes them susceptible to larger birds and other potential threats.
