Breed Origin

The Havamalt is a designer hybrid that merges the Havanese and Maltese breeds. As a relatively new creation, it lacks comprehensive documentation beyond what is available for its parent breeds. Without a standardized model for hybrids, a Havamalt may display a variety of traits or physical characteristics inherited from either lineage. However, due to their close genetic ties, many features from both breeds tend to overlap. Prospective owners can delve into the histories of the Havanese and Maltese to better understand the potential behaviors and traits of their Havamalt. The Havanese has its roots in the Maltese, having journeyed from Europe to Cuba in the 15th century. These dogs were transported on Spanish ships and experienced a long period of isolation on the Cuban islands. Unfortunately, the breed faced a severe decline during the Cuban Revolution, with only 11 dogs surviving that tumultuous era. Thankfully, all Havanese outside of Cuba today can trace their ancestry back to these original eleven. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Bichon-type Havanese in 1996. Conversely, the Maltese originated as a companion breed in Italy and Malta, the latter of which inspired its name. Historical accounts suggest that Maltese dogs were present in ancient civilizations, including those of the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. By the 15th century, the Maltese had reached France and was later brought to England during the reign of King Henry VIII. The breed quickly gained popularity among noblewomen, including prominent figures such as Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Mary of Scots, and Queen Victoria. The Maltese is considered one of the oldest breeds and serves as a foundational breed for other Bichon-type dogs, including the Bichon Frise, the Bolognese, and the Havanese.

Breed Appearance

The Havamalt is a small hybrid breed created by crossing the Havanese and the Maltese. This breed typically displays a mostly white coat, similar to that of the Maltese, but may also show characteristics of the Havanese, including variations in coat color. Both parent breeds are petite and share a close genetic connection, resulting in their striking resemblance. Havamalts are characterized by their large, widely spaced eyes and low-set ears that are often feathered. They have a prominent black nose situated on a medium-length, tapered muzzle. Their tail curls elegantly over their back, featuring a moderate plume, while their legs are relatively shorter in proportion to their body length.

Care Routine

The Havamalt is a breed recognized for being hypoallergenic and having low shedding tendencies. To maintain its luxurious, long coat, however, it requires weekly grooming. Due to its Maltese heritage, this breed may experience tear staining, particularly in lighter-colored individuals, necessitating regular eye cleaning to prevent discoloration. Furthermore, the long fur around their ears can trap dirt, debris, and moisture, making it crucial to clean this area frequently with a veterinarian-recommended solution to prevent ear infections and unpleasant odors. Fortunately, Havamalts generally do not have a strong doggy odor. With their playful and attentive nature, these dogs are relatively easy to train. They have moderate energy levels and, while daily exercise is important, a simple romp around the house can adequately fulfill their activity requirements.

Behavior & Temperament

The Havamalt is an exuberant and spirited breed, reflecting the joyful characteristics of both its parent breeds. This dog is full of energy, spreading warmth and affection wherever it goes. Although the Havamalt is generally loving, it may not exhibit the same level of patience with young children as it does with other family members. With appropriate socialization, however, it can learn to accept children, especially if they are taught to interact with the Havamalt gently and respectfully. Additionally, your Havamalt may be somewhat reserved around strangers. To help it feel more at ease in different environments, consider taking it on walks to meet neighbors and enrolling it in obedience classes, which will introduce it to new people and other dogs.

The Havamalt possesses a balanced energy level and needs regular physical activity, but it doesn't require rigorous exercise routines. This breed can meet its exercise requirements indoors and doesn't need long outdoor sessions; a small yard is sufficient for a quick run. With adequate activity, your Havamalt will thrive in an indoor setting, making it well-suited for city living and compact spaces.
