Breed Origin
The Mauxie, an energetic and friendly designer hybrid, has surged in popularity during the 21st century. This breed is officially acknowledged by various organizations, such as the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Dog Registry of America, and the International Designer Canine Registry. Although the precise origins and history of the Mauxie remain somewhat obscure, it is widely believed that this hybrid was developed for its attractive appearance and companionship. In contrast, the Maltese is a delightful small dog with a deep-rooted history, recognized as an ancient breed that dates back 6,000 to 8,000 years to Malta. While it is primarily linked to Malta, evidence of this breed has also been uncovered in archaeological sites throughout Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Due to its long lineage, tracing the Maltese's ancestry is complex; however, breeders theorize that it may have evolved from the Spitz and various Spaniel breeds. The Dachshund, characterized by its determined personality, has a history that stretches back to the 15th century, originally bred for hunting badgers, foxes, and wild boars. Over time, breeders began to cross the Dachshund with different small Pinscher and Pointer breeds, resulting in a courageous, elongated dog adept at burrowing into dens to chase its quarry.
Breed Appearance
The Mauxie is an adorable hybrid that resembles a plush teddy bear, typically standing at a maximum height of 10 inches. A standout feature of this breed is its long, soft fur, available in various solid and bi-color patterns. Mauxies often showcase delicate, fine-boned traits similar to those of the Maltese, combined with the sleek, athletic build of a Dachshund. Their appearance is characterized by round, medium-sized eyes, floppy ears, and long tails that are usually held high. They also have a medium-length muzzle, a slender skull, and short legs. Owners are sure to be captivated by the Mauxie's charming, expressive face, accentuated by its soulful, doe-like eyes.
Care Routine
These canine divas usually have medium to long fur that is prone to matting. Although Mauxies may not have the thick, luxurious coats typical of Maltese, they still need daily grooming. This is crucial because their fur can easily collect debris, resulting in mats that can cause discomfort if not managed. It is recommended to brush Mauxies every day and arrange for professional grooming every 6 to 12 weeks, particularly during the warmer seasons. When it comes to bathing, Mauxies should only be washed when they appear dirty. Special attention should be given to their hindquarters, as feces can become trapped or tangled in their fur over time. Furthermore, regular cleaning of their teeth and ears is essential to prevent potential health issues or infections. Nail trimming should also be done every 6 to 12 weeks.
Behavior & Temperament
The Mauxie displays a bold demeanor, often acting like a large dog trapped in a smaller body. This breed can show a strong personality and may instigate playtime with bigger dogs. Typically, Mauxies are sociable with other pets and dogs, as long as they are monitored. When it comes to children, they tend to favor gentle, older kids who won’t tug at their tails or fur too much. Mauxies can be prone to nipping and generally dislike rough handling. Their responses to unfamiliar people can vary significantly; they may be either inquisitive and playful or shy and withdrawn, demonstrating an inconsistent temperament in these encounters.
Play & Exercise
Mauxies are wonderful companions for anyone in search of a small dog that craves love and attention. These mixed-breed dogs adapt easily to different living environments and climates. Although they can thrive in apartments with the right training, some may struggle with housebreaking. Mauxies require approximately 60 minutes of exercise daily, which can be achieved through short walks, interactive play with toys, and socializing with other dogs. Despite their petite stature, they can become destructive if they don’t receive enough physical activity. Moreover, if left alone for long stretches, Mauxies may develop separation anxiety, often resulting in excessive barking.
