The Mini Chisoxy, commonly known as the Taco Terrier, is an adorable hybrid that emerges from the combination of the Mini Fox Terrier and the Chihuahua. This petite dog belongs to the toy breed category, which contributes to his notably small stature. Renowned for his loving and gentle disposition, he also exhibits a remarkable level of intelligence. His playful spirit can provide endless entertainment, and he is hypoallergenic, making him a suitable companion for those with allergies. While he may bark sparingly and show initial wariness towards unfamiliar faces, he generally warms up with time. With early socialization, he tends to be especially good with children.

Breed Origin

Breed Origin

The Mini Chisoxy is a relatively rare hybrid breed, and understanding its background requires exploring the histories of its parent breeds. The Miniature Fox Terrier has roots that date back to 16th-century England, where it was initially bred to find foxes in their dens and help flush them out. Notably, the smaller "runts" from Smooth Fox Terrier litters were often prized for their lively temperament and exceptional hunting abilities, particularly in catching rats and foxes. These dogs were also recognized for their courage in protecting their territory. Originally, all sizes of the Smooth Fox Terrier were categorized under a single breed; however, as smaller breeds emerged with the goal of creating toy-sized dogs, the Miniature Fox Terrier was eventually acknowledged as a separate breed. Conversely, the Chihuahua hails from Central and South America, with a strong connection to Mexico. This breed is associated with the ancient Aztec civilization, where a hairless dog resembling the Chihuahua was thought to have healing powers and was often kept close to the sick for warmth, leading to the saying "three-dog night." The modern Chihuahua was first recognized in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and American tourists who encountered the breed brought it back to the U.S., where it rapidly became a favorite.

Breed Appearance

The Taco Terrier is a small breed, generally weighing up to ten pounds and standing at a height of no more than ten inches. Its coat is typically short and straight, showcasing a variety of colors derived from its parent breeds, such as crimson, chocolate, black and tan, sable, red, brindle, tri-colored (spotted), and white. This breed is characterized by its notably long, upright ears and a medium-length straight tail. Despite its petite size, the Taco Terrier possesses relatively long, muscular legs that contribute to its robust physique. Additionally, it often features a small, round head, commonly known as an "apple-head."

Care Routine

Care Routine

The Mini Chisoxy is quite easy to care for. A weekly brushing is enough to keep his coat looking sleek and shiny. However, during the spring and fall, you might want to increase brushing to two or three times a week to reduce shedding, which can result in hair on your clothes and furniture. Only give him a bath when absolutely necessary, as his natural oils are beneficial for maintaining a healthy coat. For dental hygiene, it's recommended to brush his teeth two to three times a week to prevent tartar buildup and bad breath. Since small breeds like the Taco Terrier are susceptible to dental problems, daily brushing is ideal to avoid tooth decay and loss. Additionally, trim his nails every two weeks unless they wear down naturally. A good rule of thumb is to trim them if you can hear them clicking on tile floors.

Behavior & Temperament

The Mini Chisoxy is a charming, intelligent, and loving companion. Known for his unwavering loyalty and protective nature, he is deeply devoted to his family. Always eager to participate in family activities, you’ll often find him following you from room to room, intrigued by your every action. As a vigilant watchdog, he will promptly alert you to anything unusual in his environment. While some Mini Chisoxies enjoy relaxing on the couch, others are quite active, with their energy levels largely determined by the traits of their dominant parent breed. Unlike Chihuahuas, which typically bond closely with one person, the Mini Chisoxy tends to shower affection on all family members. He may find it challenging to cope with extended periods of solitude, and dogs that are prone to separation anxiety can display destructive behaviors. Therefore, if you expect to be away for long durations, it’s crucial to consider how this might impact a Mini Chisoxy.

Play & Exercise

Play & Exercise

The Mini Chisoxy is a lively companion who may either be full of energy or prefer to lounge beside you on the couch. Regardless of his mood, he needs daily exercise to maintain his health. He loves to run and play outside, but it’s crucial to keep him in a safe environment, as he has a natural instinct to chase small creatures like squirrels. Fetch is another favorite game of his. Trips to the dog park are perfect for this Taco Terrier, and he will joyfully join you for long walks. As long as you provide encouragement, the Mini Chisoxy will stay active, but be attentive to any signs of fatigue. It’s vital never to leave him unsupervised outdoors; his small stature makes him vulnerable to predators like hawks. Be careful not to push him too hard, and especially on hot days, make sure he has access to plenty of water.
