Breed Origin

The Mini Foxillon gets its name from its parent breeds: the Toy Fox Terrier and the Papillon. The Papillon is a historic breed with roots stretching back over 700 years in France, where it became a favorite among European nobility and the elite. This breed is even depicted in Italian frescoes and artworks dating back to the 13th century. Initially, Papillons had drooping ears, but they eventually evolved to feature the upright ears we recognize today. Interestingly, some litters still produce puppies with both ear types. In North America, the breed gained popularity in the early 20th century, with the American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognizing it in 1915. Conversely, the Toy Fox Terrier originated in the United States in the early 1900s, descending from the Smooth Fox Terrier and various toy breeds, such as the Italian Greyhound, Toy Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, and Chihuahua. Originally bred to hunt small pests, the Toy Fox Terrier's compact size, intelligence, and energetic nature made it a popular performer in shows and circuses throughout the 20th century. The AKC recognized this breed as part of the Toy Group in 2003. The Mini Foxillon is thought to have emerged in the early to mid-1900s, a period when both parent breeds were well-established and popular in the U.S. This hybrid likely blends the friendly disposition of the Papillon with the intelligence of the Toy Fox Terrier. Although it is not recognized by the AKC, the Mini Foxillon has carved out a niche among designer breeds. Prospective owners should note that this breed can display a wide variety of temperaments and appearances, making it crucial to conduct thorough research on breeders before deciding to acquire a puppy.

Breed Appearance

The Mini Foxillon is a small, well-balanced dog that embodies characteristics from both of its parent breeds. A standout feature of this breed is its upright, bat-like ears, which are positioned high on their small heads. Mini Foxillons also have dark, round eyes and either a black or brown nose. Their slender muzzles taper to a tidy scissor bite. This breed showcases a range of color combinations, including black, white, red, and fawn, with the possibility of a sable pattern. Their coats are usually short to medium in length, straight, and have a silky texture. If they inherit traits from the Papillon side, they may display subtle feathering around their ears, feet, paws, and underbelly.
