The Mini Foxingese is an endearing hybrid that combines the Toy Fox Terrier and the Pekingese, classified as a toy breed with a lifespan of approximately 13 to 15 years. Weighing between 6 and 10 pounds and standing 7 to 10 inches tall, this relatively recent and distinctive breed has not yet received full recognition from the American Kennel Club. Nevertheless, the Mini Foxingese has swiftly established itself as a vigilant and dignified companion. Its elegant, prancing gait and lustrous coat emphasize the breed's noble nature. Like its parent breeds, the Mini Foxingese thrives on human companionship and often develops a strong attachment to one particular individual in its household.
Breed Origin
The Mini Foxingese gets its name from its small stature and the heritage of its parent breeds: the Toy Fox Terrier and the Pekingese. The Toy Fox Terrier stands out as one of the few purebred breeds that originated in the United States. This breed is a robust combination of the Smooth Fox Terrier and several smaller breeds, such as the Italian Greyhound, Toy Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, and Chihuahua. Developed in the early 20th century for hunting and controlling small vermin, it quickly became popular on farms across the country due to its efficiency. Over the years, Toy Fox Terriers also found their way into carnivals, becoming beloved performance animals throughout the 1900s. During this time, families began to adopt this small breed as household pets, leading to its official recognition by the American Kennel Club in 2003. The Pekingese, the other parent breed of the Mini Foxingese, is one of the oldest dog breeds, with roots tracing back to ancient China, named after the capital city, Peking (now Beijing). The Chinese regarded the Pekingese as spiritually significant, believing it embodied the mythical “Foo” dog, which was thought to safeguard its owners from evil spirits. As a result, this breed was highly esteemed among the elite in imperial China. For much of its existence, the breed was closely protected by the Chinese; however, during the Second Opium War in the 1860s, several Pekingese were smuggled out by invading Western European forces. Once introduced to the global stage, the Pekingese quickly became popular, particularly in the United Kingdom and North America, where it was recognized by the AKC in 1909. Given that both parent breeds have been in North America since the early 1900s, it is believed that the Mini Foxingese has been bred intermittently for nearly a century, although it has only recently been recognized as a designer breed, albeit not by the AKC.
Breed Appearance
The Mini Foxingese is a petite and sturdy breed that showcases a range of physical characteristics inherited from its parent breeds. Generally, this breed is characterized by its short height, curled tail, and drooping ears, which are reminiscent of the Pekingese, while also embodying the agility and alertness typical of the Toy Fox Terrier. Weighing between 6 and 10 pounds and standing 7 to 10 inches tall, Mini Foxingese dogs feature dark, round eyes and a button nose that can be either black or brown. Their muzzles are slightly tapered, and they possess a relatively level bite, a trait influenced by their Terrier ancestry. The breed has medium-length coats that are straight and silky, coming in a variety of colors and patterns that reflect both parent breeds. Furthermore, their small, round paws enhance their light and nimble movement.
Care Routine
Mini Foxingese dogs are not classified as hypoallergenic, which makes them a poor choice for those with allergies. Their fur is medium in length and dense, shedding moderately and requiring occasional grooming. To maintain a soft, neat coat free of debris, owners should utilize a pin or slicker brush, and possibly a dematter, on a weekly basis. While some pet owners opt for professional grooming services, others may choose to trim or clip the longer fur themselves. Furthermore, this breed benefits from a monthly bath, during which it’s essential to clean their ears and eyes thoroughly. Like all dogs, Mini Foxingese should have their teeth brushed daily to avoid plaque buildup and other dental problems.
Behavior & Temperament
The Mini Foxingese is a delightful blend of the Toy Fox Terrier's sharp alertness and the regal demeanor of the Pekingese. These dogs thrive on human companionship and are eager to please their owners, making them not only trainable but also fantastic travel buddies. Typically, a Mini Foxingese will form a close attachment to one person in the household, often shadowing them closely. While this bond can be endearing, it also makes them prone to separation anxiety, so they do best in environments where their owner is often present. When it comes to interacting with other pets, children, and unfamiliar adults, Mini Foxingese may exhibit caution, sometimes barking or showing signs of anxiety around new faces. To ensure your Mini Foxingese develops good social skills, it’s crucial to provide early and consistent exposure to a variety of people and situations. In essence, these loving and entertaining dogs thrive in nurturing homes where they can enjoy constant companionship.
Play & Exercise
Mini Foxingese dogs typically require around 15 to 30 minutes of light exercise daily. They flourish during playtime with their owners and appreciate short walks. Given their size and energy, this breed may not be the best fit for dog parks, although individual situations should be evaluated by their owners. With a natural instinct to hunt and explore, it's important for owners to exercise caution when introducing a Mini Foxingese to unfenced areas or places where they can roam freely. Overall, Mini Foxingese adapt well to different climates and living environments, making them excellent companions for city residents or those living in apartments, as long as they receive plenty of quality time with their beloved humans.
