The Poo-Ton is an enchanting mix, born from the combination of a purebred Coton de Tulear and a purebred toy or miniature Poodle. Commonly referred to as a Doodle-Ton, Cotondoodle, or Cotonpoo, these small dogs are full of vitality and make excellent family pets. They are celebrated for their loving disposition and thrive on the affection of their owners. Friendly with children and other animals alike, they also act as surprisingly effective watchdogs despite their small stature. Their coats come in a range of colors, such as apricot, lemon, white, black, grey, brown, and sable, and typically vary from medium to long, featuring either wavy or curly textures. Moreover, these delightful dogs are often deemed hypoallergenic, making them a great option for allergy sufferers. Although they shed minimally, regular grooming is necessary to prevent tangles, along with occasional trims to maintain their coat's health.

Breed Origin

The Poo-Ton’s origins are somewhat unclear, but it is recognized as a hybrid breed created by crossing a Coton de Tulear with a toy or miniature purebred Poodle. The Coton de Tulear originates from Madagascar, an African island nation, and is related to both the Bichon Frise and the Maltese. Its name reflects its soft, cotton-like fur and the coastal city of Tulear, now known as Toliara. Historical records indicate that the Coton's ancestors were brought to Madagascar by pirates during the 16th and 17th centuries, where they were utilized as rat catchers. The breed quickly became favored by the royal families of Madagascar, who were the only ones allowed to own these delightful and gentle dogs. Today, they are affectionately referred to as the "Royal Dog of Madagascar" and were even commemorated on a postage stamp in 1974. Dr. Robert Jay Russell is credited with introducing the breed to the United States in 1973, and the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Coton de Tulear in 2014. On the other hand, toy Poodles are known for their impeccable grooming and high intelligence, excelling in tricks and swimming. Initially bred for hunting waterfowl, they are often regarded as France's national dog, despite their German heritage. In Germany, they were referred to as “pudel” or “pudelin,” meaning to splash in water, while in France, they were called “chien canard” or “caniche,” emphasizing their duck-hunting skills. There are various theories about their lineage; some suggest they evolved from curly-coated dogs in Central Asia that migrated westward with Gothic tribes, eventually becoming a German hunting breed. Others believe these dogs made their way from Asia to Portugal in the 8th century with the Moors. The Standard Poodle is the oldest of the three varieties, which were later bred down to miniature and toy sizes. Notable figures such as Barbara Streisand, Elizabeth Taylor, and Priscilla Presley have all been enthusiastic owners of Poodles.

Breed Appearance

The Poo-Ton is an endearing designer breed created by crossing a purebred Coton de Tulear with a purebred Poodle. Generally, these dogs weigh up to 15 pounds and reach a height of around 12 inches. Their coats can range from medium to long and may exhibit either curly or wavy textures, influenced by their parentage. The fur is light and comes in a spectrum of colors, such as apricot, lemon, white, black, grey, brown, and sable. Poo-Tons are characterized by their small, expressive brown eyes and ears that elegantly frame their faces. Despite their small stature, they have a robust build and feature short tails. Their muzzles are notably compact, accentuated by their unique black noses.

Care Routine

The Poo-Ton experiences minimal shedding, yet it requires regular grooming to keep its coat looking its best. Given the fine texture of their fur, tangles can develop quickly, so daily brushing with a pin brush and routine combing is recommended. Their hypoallergenic nature makes them a great choice for those with allergies. Occasional trimming is also necessary. Bathing should be limited and only performed with a veterinarian-approved dog shampoo to prevent irritation of their sensitive skin. Daily dental care is crucial to avoid oral health issues. Furthermore, it's important to routinely check their ears for dirt and gently clean them with damp cotton wool when needed. Lastly, assess their nails to see if they require clipping.

Behavior & Temperament

The Poo-Ton is a lively and affectionate breed, making it a perfect choice for families. Renowned for their intelligence and gentle nature, these dogs are very attuned to their owners. Their sociable character means they do not do well when left alone; they flourish in the presence of people and love to engage with everyone around them. While they are fantastic companions for children, their small stature requires supervision with younger kids who might play a bit too roughly. Poo-Tons typically get along well with other dogs and even cats, particularly if they are socialized from a young age. Their desire to please makes them quick learners, which is why they are often suggested for first-time dog owners. Moreover, they act as alert watchdogs, barking to notify their owners of any potential intruders without being excessively loud. Full of vitality, Poo-Tons enjoy playtime, which offers them both physical activity and mental stimulation.

Play & Exercise

Your Poo-Ton doesn't need rigorous exercise to remain happy and healthy, but they do enjoy daily walks, whether it's at the beach or in the neighborhood. These dogs are playful and love activities like chasing balls or frisbees. They adapt well to smaller living environments, such as apartments, as long as they are near their family and get regular exercise to burn off energy. While they appreciate having a garden to play in, they are just as content indoors. Poo-Tons are generally tolerant of both hot and cold weather, but it's crucial not to leave them outside for long periods. As with all dogs, it's best to avoid exercising them during extreme heat.
