After the Civil War, the Pug made its way to the United States, earning official recognition from the American Kennel Club in 1885. In contrast, the Pekingese is steeped in myth, believed to have originated from a legendary pairing of a lion and a marmoset. Known as Lion dogs, they were named for their resemblance to the ancient Chinese guardian lions, or Shishi, also referred to as Pelchie dogs. Many believed these dogs had mystical powers that could protect palaces and temples. During this time, they were treated with great reverence, often having their own attendants. The importance of these dogs was such that anyone caught stealing one faced severe penalties, including death. It was also customary for a Pekingese to be euthanized to accompany its owner in burial, ensuring they would be reunited in the afterlife. In 1860, during the Opium Wars, five Pekingese were found when the Imperial Summer Palace was invaded. One of these dogs was presented to Queen Victoria, which led to a surge in the breed's popularity. However, due to their rarity, Pekingese became exceedingly expensive, making them unattainable for most people. The breed received official recognition from the American Kennel Club in 1906.
