The Shorgi is a charming new designer dog breed created by crossing two purebred dogs: the Corgi and the Shih Tzu. These affectionate companions flourish in settings where their owners are nearby, as they require consistent attention and may experience anxiety if left alone for too long. Although they usually cope better in cooler weather than in heat, they can adjust to different climates with ease. Their small size and sociable temperament make Shorgis a fantastic choice for those living in apartments. Furthermore, their gentle and devoted nature makes them ideal pets for families.

Breed Origin

Breed Origin

The Shorgi is a recently developed hybrid breed that has quickly become popular in homes around the globe. This breed is the result of crossing a Corgi with a Shih Tzu. The Corgi parent can be either a Cardigan Welsh Corgi or a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Although these two varieties are now classified as separate breeds, this distinction is relatively new; for nearly 80 years, both types could be found in the same litter and were regarded as a single breed. Significant differences have led to their classification as distinct breeds. For example, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is generally larger and heavier, with a longer tail than the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The Cardigan is also the older breed, with a history that stretches back over 3,000 years, during which they were used for herding cattle and valued as family pets. Pembroke Corgis, while also bred for farm work, gained considerable recognition in England, particularly due to Queen Elizabeth II, who has owned several of them. Today, Corgis are primarily cherished as affectionate companions, although they still possess some working abilities. In contrast, Shih Tzus are among the oldest dog breeds, believed to be within the top 15. They originated from either China or Tibet and were prized as companion animals, often depicted in various historical Chinese and Tibetan art. Known as "little lion dogs," Shih Tzus made their debut in England in 1928.

Breed Appearance

These delightful medium-sized dogs display a unique combination of traits inherited from both the Corgi and the Shih Tzu. Due to their mixed heritage, individual Shorgis may present a variety of appearances, yet they typically share some common characteristics. Most often, they exhibit the short legs and elongated bodies typical of their Corgi lineage, while their heads bear a resemblance to those of the Shih Tzu. The ears can differ significantly, reflecting the influence of either parent breed; they may stand upright, hang down, or even show a mix of both styles. Furthermore, their coats can vary, showcasing a fusion of Corgi and Shih Tzu features or leaning more towards one breed's distinct qualities. As a result, their fur can range from medium to long, often described as shiny, silky, and smooth.

Care Routine

Care Routine

These dogs shed moderately, and the brushing frequency depends on their coat type. For those with long fur, daily brushing is advisable, while shorter-haired dogs need grooming less often. The Shorgi generally requires bathing only occasionally instead of on a set schedule. It's also recommended to brush their teeth two to three times a week, although daily brushing is preferable for optimal dental health. Regular dental care is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Nail trimming should occur once or twice a month, with the timing influenced by the dog's activity level and the natural wear of their nails. To prevent ear infections, weekly ear cleaning is essential.

Behavior & Temperament

The Shorgi is a breed characterized by its strong determination and a deep need for attention and affection from its owners. These dogs thrive on companionship and should not be left alone for long periods, as this can result in separation anxiety and unwanted behaviors. Although they crave love and connection, Shorgis also exhibit a certain level of independence. They are loyal companions who can be protective and territorial, often showing caution or even aggression towards strangers. Training a Shorgi is generally an easy process, and their love for cuddling makes them a wonderful choice for families. With appropriate socialization, Shorgis typically interact well with children, other pets, and dogs. This breed is manageable and ideal for first-time dog owners who may not have extensive experience. It is essential to establish obedience training to ensure that your Shorgi acknowledges you as the leader and respects your authority.

Play & Exercise

Play & Exercise

These dogs flourish in a range of temperatures, but they generally prefer cooler environments. If you notice your dog getting too hot while exercising, it's crucial to take a break and let them cool off. While they can adjust to living in an apartment, they need plenty of physical activity to stay energetic, both indoors and outdoors. The Shorgi particularly enjoys several walks each day along with some playtime. While a yard isn't essential for their happiness, having one would certainly enhance their experience. Overall, try to ensure they get around 30 to 45 minutes of effective exercise daily.
