Breed Type : Pure Breeds
Breed Size: Small

Originally developed for hunting pests and chasing foxes, the Smooth Fox Terrier typically weighs between 15 and 19 pounds and reaches a height of approximately 15.5 inches. While its historical records are somewhat sparse, it is believed that this breed dates back to the 1700s. Initially categorized as a variant of the Fox Terrier, alongside the Wire Fox Terrier, the Smooth Fox Terrier boasts a unique ancestry; it is thought to have evolved from Smooth Coated black and tan Terriers, the Bull Terrier, the Greyhound, and the Beagle. As one of the first breeds to compete in dog shows, the Smooth Fox Terrier tends to be cautious around strangers but is incredibly devoted to its family, making it an outstanding watchdog.

Breed Origin

Breed Origin

The Fox Terrier, originally developed in England for hunting small game, was an integral part of Foxhound packs that tracked down foxes seeking shelter. Once a fox was trapped, the Smooth Fox Terrier would drive it out. Although the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers were once considered variations of the same breed, they actually have separate ancestral lines. The Smooth Fox Terrier is thought to have originated from a mix of the Smooth-coated Black and Tan Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the Greyhound, and the Beagle. As one of the first breeds to participate in dog shows, the Smooth Fox Terrier was initially presented as a sporting breed, recognized for its ability to track and drive foxes from their dens. In 1876, the Fox Terrier Club was founded in England, followed by the establishment of the American Fox Terrier Club in 1885, which became the first specialty club to affiliate with the American Kennel Club. Initially, the American Kennel Club classified the Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers as a single breed with two varieties, but in June 1985, they officially recognized them as separate breeds, each with its own standards.

Breed Appearance

The Smooth Fox Terrier is a compact yet sturdy breed, typically measuring about 15.5 inches in height. Males usually weigh between 17 and 19 pounds, while females fall within the 15 to 17-pound range. This breed is characterized by a square physique, featuring a strong jaw with a scissors bite, a short back, a thick neck, and a slender head. Its skull is flat and tapers towards the eyes, with a muzzle that narrows down to a black nose. The eyes and their rims are dark, and the small ears fold forward close to the cheeks. Its well-proportioned body allows for swift running over long distances, making it an excellent hunting partner. The hindquarters are muscular, and the tail, often docked to about a quarter of its length, stands upright. The Smooth Fox Terrier's coat is made up of a fine undercoat and a dense, smooth outer layer, primarily white with tan or black markings.

Care Routine

Care Routine

Caring for a Smooth Fox Terrier is relatively simple. These dogs require regular brushing, particularly during their biannual shedding periods. To maintain their dental hygiene, it's crucial to brush their teeth frequently with a toothpaste recommended by a veterinarian. Bathing and nail trimming should be performed as necessary. As a lively breed, Smooth Fox Terriers thrive on activity, so having ample space in their home or yard is advantageous. A fenced yard is especially beneficial due to their energetic nature. They also love going for walks and playing. Consistent training is vital for this breed, and they typically adapt well to housebreaking.

Behavior & Temperament

The Smooth Fox Terrier is a lively breed that thrives on constant activity and seldom takes a break. Known for its playful and confident demeanor, this dog has a curious and mischievous side, often eager to be the center of attention. With a keen sense of alertness and strong loyalty to its family, the Smooth Fox Terrier is also wary of strangers, making it an effective watchdog. While they enjoy playing with children, supervision is crucial, as they may have a tendency to nip. This breed exhibits both persistence and impulsiveness, and if given the chance, it might chase after birds and small animals. Cats can be seen as potential prey, and the Smooth Fox Terrier may try to assert its dominance over other dogs; however, it can live harmoniously with other pets if raised together from a young age. Although they are intelligent, they can also be quite headstrong, making consistent training vital. Despite their energetic nature, at the end of the day, the Smooth Fox Terrier loves to snuggle up next to you while you unwind, whether you're watching TV or getting ready for bed.
