Telomian

Anjing Kampung, Village Dog, Malaysian Telomian

Purpose
Hunt vermin
Breed Type : Pure Breeds
Breed Size: Small

The Telomian is an incredibly rare purebred dog, recognized as the only breed native to Malaysia that has gained recognition beyond its borders. This breed was originally developed by Malaysia's indigenous communities for the purpose of controlling pests such as snakes, rats, mice, and various small jungle animals. Although the Telomian shares some physical traits with the Basenji, its temperament is quite distinct. This breed is athletic and exhibits a more untamed disposition compared to many domesticated dogs. With ancestral ties to wild canines like dingoes, the Telomian may not be the best fit for a family pet. It is crucial for this breed to undergo early socialization with both humans and other dogs, and it typically does not fare well in homes with young children.

Breed Origin

Breed Origin

The Telomian breed was created by the Orang Asli to effectively hunt and control small rodents, snakes, and other pests found in the Malaysian jungles. Its main function was to enter homes before their owners to identify any unwanted animals that might be hiding inside. The indigenous people of Malaysia were particularly cautious about these small pests and snakes, as the jungle provided a perfect environment for them. To safeguard themselves, the Orang Asli built their huts approximately six feet above the ground, which required the Telomian to master climbing rickety ladders to reach these elevated shelters. This necessity led to the breed developing exceptional dexterity in their paws, a trait that continues to be prominent today. Telomians are known for their ability to open doors with their paws and skillfully grasp food and toys. The breed remained largely unknown to the outside world until 1963, when Dr. Orville Elliot discovered these dogs near the Telom River, which ultimately inspired the breed's name. He brought a pair of Telomians to the United States, followed by another pair in 1973. It is generally accepted that all Telomians in the U.S. that have not been directly imported can trace their ancestry back to these original pairs. Notably, the Telomian is the first and only Malaysian breed to be developed outside its homeland. However, the population of these dogs in the United States remains too small for them to achieve official recognition from the American Kennel Club.

Breed Appearance

The Telomian is characterized by its short, streamlined coat and is particularly noted for its unique blue or black tongue, similar to that of the Chow Chow. Common color patterns include combinations of tan and white, black and white, or various shades of sable alongside white. Some individuals may also feature a black mask on their face. Many enthusiasts show a preference for Telomians that have less white and more vivid colors. This breed falls into the small to medium size category, showcasing a notably athletic physique. Typically, they reach a height of 15 to 19 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 18 and 28 pounds. Given the Telomian's rarity, there is no established formal breed standard, leading to a wide variety of appearances among individuals. While the head shape and alert demeanor may evoke thoughts of a Basenji, the Telomian stands out as a distinctly unique breed, and any resemblances should not be exaggerated.

Care Routine

Care Routine

The Telomian is a low-maintenance dog breed. A simple weekly brushing with a natural bristle brush is enough to remove loose or dead hair, keeping his coat looking shiny and clean. Baths are usually only required when he becomes dirty or starts to emit an odor. It's crucial to avoid excessive bathing or the use of harsh shampoos, as these can strip away the natural oils in his skin, resulting in dryness and irritation. When a bath is necessary, choose a mild shampoo. Originally developed in the jungles of Malaysia, the Telomian flourishes in warm temperatures, ideally between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Nevertheless, he is quite versatile and can adapt to cooler climates, as long as his family provides proper shelter from severe weather conditions. Nail trimming should be performed as needed, typically every two to three weeks. Additionally, it's important to check his ears weekly and clean them when required. Establishing a dental care routine that includes regular brushing and thorough cleaning is vital for maintaining his oral health.

Behavior & Temperament

The Telomian is an exceptionally intelligent breed, recognized for its strong prey drive and passion for running. This dog flourishes in activities that test both its mental and physical skills, deriving immense pleasure from games that engage its intellect. It is particularly drawn to interactive toys and problem-solving challenges. It's essential to understand that the Telomian is less domesticated compared to many other breeds, which means it requires comprehensive training and socialization from a young age. While this breed may not be the best fit for families with young children, it can thrive alongside older kids who know how to respect its space and establish appropriate boundaries. Instead of barking, the Telomian emits a unique sound that resembles a howl, akin to the vocalizations of the Basenji or the New Guinea Singing Dog. However, if raised with barking dogs, it can learn to bark; otherwise, as a solitary pet, it is unlikely to adopt this behavior.
