Breed Origin
The Toy Pom Terrier is a relatively new hybrid breed, and its exact origins are somewhat unclear. This delightful combination results from crossing a Pomeranian with a Toy Fox Terrier. Pomeranians, which have their ancestry rooted in Germany and Lapland, are descendants of various breeds, including the German Spitz, Alaskan Malamute, and Samoyed. Interestingly, these dogs once weighed up to 30 pounds and were used for herding sheep. The breed's standards underwent a significant transformation when Queen Victoria developed a love for them, leading her to selectively breed smaller versions as her lapdogs. Since being recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1900, Pomeranians have maintained their popularity, with their history dating back to as early as 1767. Conversely, the Toy Fox Terrier, affectionately known as the Amertoy, celebrates its American heritage. This breed is a blend of the Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, and Smooth Fox Terrier, originally bred for hunting rodents and pests. Their agility and desire to please made them popular performers in circuses. Although they appeared in the early 1900s, the American Kennel Club did not officially recognize them until 2003. Toy Fox Terriers are not only natural entertainers but also enjoy being entertained; the AKC notes their love for watching television as a distinctive characteristic. When these two charming toy breeds are combined, they produce a loyal and lively companion.
Breed Appearance
Pomeranians are well-known for their opulent double coats, unique solid colors, curled tails, and upright ears. In contrast, Toy Fox Terriers are defined by their short fur, slender limbs, naturally bobbed tails, and prominent pointed ears. Toy Pom Terriers, a hybrid of these two breeds, display a broad spectrum of physical characteristics influenced by their parentage. Their coats can differ greatly in both length and density, and they are available in almost any color imaginable. Interestingly, while pointed ears are typical for both parent breeds, Toy Pom Terriers may also inherit floppy ears. All three breeds share common traits, such as their alert expressions and pointed snouts. These small dogs are characterized by their short, slender legs and tiny paws.
Care Routine
The grooming requirements for Toy Pom Terriers can vary depending on their coat type. This breed is known to shed, whether they have short or long fur. For those with shorter coats, a weekly brushing is sufficient, while longer coats should be groomed every two weeks. It's essential to keep in mind that Toy Pom Terriers may have sensitive skin and be susceptible to allergies, so opting for unscented or gentle shampoos is recommended to avoid irritation. Behavior & Temperament
Don’t let their diminutive size fool you; these little dogs are bursting with personality and energy. Toy Pom Terriers are not only lively and playful, but they also love to cuddle with their owners. They tend to be wary of strangers and will bark to alert you to anything unusual in their environment, highlighting the importance of proper training. While they are eager to learn and please, inconsistent training can result in naughty behavior. This proud breed thrives on attention and affection. Due to their small stature and delicate legs, they may not be ideal for families with young children who might be too rough. Toy Fox Terriers are known for their nipping tendencies, a behavior that can also appear in Toy Pom Terriers. Their spirited nature and small size can sometimes lead to a Napoleon complex. However, with early socialization, they typically get along well with other pets.

Toy Pom Terriers are spirited little companions, brimming with energy despite their small size. They are quite intelligent and may bark if they don’t receive sufficient physical activity. While they don’t require long walks—about 30 minutes daily is usually enough—they do need regular interaction and stimulation. These dogs can adjust to different living situations, but in city environments, it’s crucial to provide them with consistent exercise to help control their energy levels and reduce excessive barking. They can adapt to various climates; however, those with shorter fur might need a sweater in colder weather, while those with longer coats could be more susceptible to heat.
