Breed Origin

The Chinese Shar-Pei, recognized for its diverse roles as a protector, herder, fighter, and hunter, is believed to be an ancient breed, potentially tracing its origins back to the Han Dynasty. This breed is notable for its unique blue-black tongue and is thought to share ancestry with the Chow Chow. At one point, the Shar-Pei was on the brink of extinction, but its preservation was significantly aided by Hong Kong businessman Matgo Law. After its introduction to the United States, the breed underwent selective breeding to enhance its lineage. The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America was founded in 1974, and the breed received official recognition from the American Kennel Club in 1991. Conversely, the Golden Retriever, which complements the Golden Pei, is believed to have originated during the Victorian era. This breed, which includes ancestry from retrievers, spaniels, and possibly setters, was initially developed in Scotland. The evolution of firearms heightened the need for a dependable retriever, prompting the refinement of the breed for this specific task. Celebrated for its gentle yet firm grip when retrieving waterfowl, the Golden Retriever was first recognized as Flat Coats (Golden) by the United Kennel Club of England in 1911. It was later referred to as the Retriever (Golden and Yellow) before officially adopting the name Golden Retriever in 1920. In the U.S., the breed was registered with the American Kennel Club and became part of the Sporting Group.
