Conversely, the Great Dane is thought to have originated from the old English Mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound. Historically, its ancestors were employed in warfare and hunting. In the 14th century, it gained recognition in Germany for its exceptional abilities in hunting wild boar, attributed to its impressive speed, strength, and endurance. The breed's noble and dignified appearance made it a favorite among the aristocracy. Although the English referred to it as German Boarhounds for reasons that remain unclear, it eventually became known as the Great Dane, despite having no actual connections to Denmark.
