The Mastidoodle is a large hybrid breed created by crossing a Mastiff with a Standard Poodle. These dogs usually stand as tall as 30 inches and are characterized by their sturdy build and dense, wavy coats. Their fur can easily become matted if not groomed regularly, which means they need a good deal of upkeep. Often dubbed the "teddy bear" of dogs, Mastidoodles are known for their gentle and calm demeanor, making them wonderful companions for families of all shapes and sizes.
Breed Origin
The exact origins and history of the Mastidoodle remain somewhat obscure, as this hybrid likely emerged within the last twenty years. However, it has gained official recognition from notable American canine organizations, including the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Dog Registry of America. It is reasonable to infer that the Mastidoodle has its beginnings in the Americas. The Mastiff, one of its parent breeds, is believed to have developed from several ancient large dog breeds, such as the Tibetan Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Dogue de Bordeaux, and Rottweiler, with its evolution occurring in England during the 15th century. Yet, the Mastiff's ancestry can be traced back over 2,500 years to areas in Asia and Egypt, where these strong breeds were commonly employed as guardians. Conversely, the Standard Poodle is an ancient breed thought to have originated around the first century B.C. Throughout the years, it has experienced considerable evolution and has been crossbred with various water dog breeds from countries like Russia, Spain, Germany, and France, as well as several breeds from Asia. Today, the Standard Poodle is recognized as France's national dog and is renowned for its intelligence, frequently serving as guide and service dogs.
Breed Appearance
The Mastidoodle is a large hybrid breed that can stand over 30 inches tall and weigh 120 pounds or more, particularly if it inherits traits from the Mastiff. These dogs are known for their sturdy and powerful build, featuring broad skulls and longer muzzles compared to a typical Mastiff. Their ears are wide and droop down, while their round eyes exude a gentle demeanor. The Mastidoodle is celebrated for its impressive appearance, showcasing a long, athletic, and muscular physique. They have deep, well-defined ribs and strong limbs in both the front and back. Their coat, reminiscent of a Standard Poodle's, is thick and wavy, often with a coarse texture, and can come in various solid colors or two-tone combinations.
Care Routine
The Standard Poodle is frequently seen as one of the dog breeds that demands the most attention when it comes to grooming. Mastidoodles, which usually inherit the Standard Poodle's wavy, thick, and dense coat, are often hypoallergenic and tend to shed very little. However, don’t expect grooming to be either cheap or simple. Depending on your geographical area and the climate, your Mastidoodle will need grooming roughly every 6 to 12 weeks. During the hotter months, some may require grooming as often as every 4 weeks to help them stay comfortable. In addition to grooming, it’s important to brush their teeth weekly, trim their nails every 6 weeks, and regularly clean their ears while monitoring for any signs of infection.

These delightful hybrids are often likened to "teddy bears" because of their affectionate nature and unwavering loyalty, which are evident despite their larger frame. Mastidoodles are incredibly adaptable, making them great companions for everyone in the household, including children and smaller pets. However, due to their considerable size, it’s essential to monitor their interactions with young kids or tiny animals, as their exuberant playfulness might inadvertently cause mishaps. Moreover, Mastidoodles make excellent watchdogs, inheriting the courageous and protective instincts from their Mastiff ancestry. They are quick to alert their owners to any unfamiliar faces nearby. It’s also vital to remember that these dogs shouldn’t be left alone for long stretches. Thanks to their Poodle lineage, they thrive on mental stimulation; without it, they may experience anxiety or resort to destructive behaviors out of sheer boredom.
Play & Exercise
The Standard Poodle is recognized for its energetic nature, agility, and athletic prowess, whereas the Mastiff is generally more moderately active. Consequently, a Mastidoodle is anticipated to exhibit a balanced level of activity, likely positioned between these two breeds. This mixed breed is expected to relish activities such as tug-of-war, long walks, short runs, and playtime at dog parks. They are adaptable to different living environments, as long as there is sufficient space for both play and rest. However, they may struggle in small apartments where space is restricted.
