The Kooikerhondje, pronounced COY-ker-HUND-che, is an energetic red and white dog that belongs to the Spaniel family. Renowned for its spirited personality, this breed loves to play and excels in various canine sports such as barn hunts, dock diving, lure coursing, and agility trials. What distinguishes the Kooikerhondje from other active breeds is its remarkable ability to tailor its energy levels to fit the lifestyle of its family. This dog develops strong connections with its owners and typically gets along well with children and cats. However, due to its strong prey drive, it’s crucial to supervise the Kooikerhondje around smaller animals like ferrets, hamsters, and birds. This versatile breed can adapt well to living in both a small apartment and a spacious farm.

Breed Origin

Breed Origin

The Kooikerhondje, a unique breed from the Netherlands, was initially bred as a duck dog, designed to attract ducks into traps for research or commercial purposes. Beyond this primary function, these dogs also played a role in managing small pests around homes while working with waterfowl. The Kooikerhondje operates within enclosures called eendenkoois, strategically placed along the canals and wetlands of the Netherlands. To effectively draw ducks into these traps, the breed requires a combination of intelligence and tenacity. It is believed that the Kooikerhondje is closely related to the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Artistic depictions of the Kooikerhondje or similar breeds can be traced back to 16th-century Dutch artwork. However, it wasn't until 1971 that the breed gained official recognition in the Netherlands. The Kooikerhondje nearly faced extinction during World War II, but thanks to the dedication of a few devoted enthusiasts, the breed has experienced a remarkable resurgence and is gradually becoming more popular around the globe. Today, very few Kooikerhondjes are involved in their original roles. Instead, they are primarily bred as adaptable family pets. Their energetic and athletic nature makes them excellent companions for children and suitable contenders in various dog sports, such as agility, dock diving, and lure coursing. The Kooikerhondje Society of America and the Kooikerhondje Club of the USA are the two main organizations dedicated to the breed, actively seeking recognition from the American Kennel Club (AKC). In 2004, the breed became eligible for registration through the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service, marking a significant milestone toward official recognition by the AKC.

Breed Appearance

The Kooikerhondje is an elegant breed, known for its noble presence; it holds its head high and keeps its tail aligned with its back as it strides. This breed is distinguished by its red or orange-red parti-coloring, with any other colors being deemed unacceptable. While there may be a subtle black tipping on the ear tips, it should be minimal. The red or orange-red markings must be sharply defined, and the chest and belly should be a flawless white, devoid of any freckling or ticking. Some spots may be present on the legs and muzzle, but they should not be so numerous as to detract from the breed's overall appearance. The coat is of medium length, lying close to the body, and can be straight or slightly wavy, but it must never be curly. The topcoat is soft and resistant to the elements. The front legs should have a moderate amount of feathering, while the hind legs should feature enough feathering to create a “breeches” or “skirts” effect, with no feathering below the hock. Furthermore, the tail should be well-feathered on its underside.

Care Routine

The Kooikerhondje boasts a medium-length coat that is soft to the touch and can be either straight or slightly wavy. This breed is characterized by feathering on its legs, ears, and tail, which can easily become tangled or matted. To keep the coat in good condition, regular brushing is crucial—ideally once or twice a week—to remove loose or dead hair and prevent knots from forming. Due to the coat's softness, using a dog-safe leave-in conditioner is recommended to help reduce hair breakage. Many of these conditioners also have detangling features, making it simpler to manage any tangles. For grooming, a pin brush is suggested, along with a metal comb to address any stubborn knots. Consistent grooming not only promotes a healthy coat but also minimizes the amount of hair that may accumulate in your home. While Kooikerhondjes shed throughout the year, they experience more significant shedding twice a year. As a breed that enjoys water, they do not need frequent full baths; however, it is essential to rinse their coat with fresh water after swimming in pools, lakes, or ponds.

Behavior & Temperament

The Kooikerhondje is an intelligent and lively breed that readily adjusts to its owner's way of life. This dog is not only easy to train but also has a strong desire to please, making interactions enjoyable. To establish authority and earn respect, it’s important for all family members to participate in the training. While most Kooikerhondjes are generally friendly and open to newcomers, some may be more reserved and take time to acclimate. Early socialization is vital for helping them develop into well-rounded pets. These dogs are known for their vocal tendencies and will notify you if someone approaches your home. Although they are not typically excessive barkers, they can become bothersome if left alone in the yard for long periods. Furthermore, without adequate mental stimulation or engaging toys, they may resort to destructive behaviors.
