The English Toy Spaniel made its way to the United States from England in 1886, the same year it was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) under the ownership of Susannah Roberts (Mrs. B. F. Wilson) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This breed became the AKC's third toy breed, following the Yorkshire Terrier and the Pug. The English Toy Spaniel is available in four distinct color patterns: tan and black (previously referred to as the King Charles), white, tan, and black (known as the Prince Charles), red and white (Blenheim), and solid red (Ruby). With its long, lustrous coat, square head, and short legs, this breed has a compact physique, typically standing about 10 inches tall and weighing around 12 pounds.

Although this breed was first acknowledged in England, its origins are thought to trace back to Asia. Many specialists agree that these dogs were gifted to royalty from Japan. Prior to 1903, the four color variations of the English Toy Spaniel were treated as separate breeds for show purposes, even though they were interbred. The recognized color variations include tan and black (King Charles), white, tan, and black (Prince Charles), red and white (Blenheim), and solid red (Ruby). Each name has its own historical context; for example, the King Charles is named in honor of King Charles II of England, while the Blenheim takes its name from the estate of John Churchill, celebrating his victory at the Battle of Blenheim. Prominent individuals who have owned English Toy Spaniels include Queen Mary I, Queen Elizabeth II, and Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia. In 1904, the American Kennel Club (AKC) chose to consolidate all four color variations into one breed, now known as the English Toy Spaniel. In the early 20th century, these dogs were reportedly crossbred with Pugs, leading to their distinctive short muzzles and smaller size. Throughout the 1900s, efforts were made to revive the King Charles Spaniel by mixing it with the Toy Trawler Spaniel, which ultimately failed, and with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which has since become quite popular. Although they were originally bred for hunting, their diminutive size made them less effective in that capacity. Nonetheless, they retain strong hunting instincts and prefer the cozy life of lap dogs.
The English Toy Spaniel is a compact, square-shaped breed known for its distinctive large, flat nose and rounded head, radiating a friendly and affectionate personality. Its long, silky coat is generally straight, although some may display a gentle wave. The breed's sturdy and compact physique gives it a robust look, enhanced by its striking dark eyes and fluffy face, which add to its endearing appeal. Characterized by a broad, rounded head and long, elegantly drooping ears covered in luxurious fur, the English Toy Spaniel boasts a short, muscular body with a wide back, making it both solid and well-balanced. Its legs are short but strong, and the small, furry feet feature toes that are fused together. Coat colors are diverse, including black and tan—formerly known as King Charles—white, tan, and black, previously referred to as Prince Charles; red and white, once called Blenheim; and solid red, known as Ruby.

Your English Toy Spaniel needs to be brushed daily or every other day with a firm bristle brush, and a metal comb may be required to address any mats. Due to their long, silky coat, tangles can easily develop, so it’s important to carefully untangle them by hand, using your fingers to gently separate the knotted strands. Bathing should be limited to every few months or whenever your dog gets especially dirty. When you do bathe her, choose a mild dog shampoo and conditioner that your veterinarian recommends. This is also an ideal opportunity to check her nails, eyes, and ears for any dirt or debris, cleaning them as your vet suggests. Although your English Toy Spaniel might prefer relaxing on the couch over exercising, daily walks are crucial. Be cautious of extreme weather conditions, whether it’s too hot or too cold, and always provide her with ample water if she will be outside for a long time. Their small size and calm nature make them particularly well-suited for apartment living.
The English Toy Spaniel enjoys relaxing on the couch with family, embodying a calm and easygoing personality rather than an active lifestyle. Known for their gentle and serene disposition, these dogs make excellent companions for both children and other pets. They do exhibit a degree of wariness around unfamiliar faces, which enhances their role as effective watchdogs. To prevent the development of aggressive behaviors towards other animals, early socialization is essential. Although they can be a bit headstrong, they typically learn quickly and respond positively to training. These dogs often see children as playmates, but it’s crucial to supervise their interactions with young kids to avoid any potential accidents. As indoor pets, they are particularly sensitive to extreme weather conditions, whether hot or cold. Their short snouts can lead to sounds like wheezing, snorting, and snoring. Furthermore, they require considerable attention and may experience separation anxiety, which can result in them chewing on inappropriate items when left alone.
